I discuss having to deal with Christian psuedo-intellectual apologists in my previous article, but those people who accost us are often not technically apologists. Apologetics are about defending one’s position. They are about attacking yours. A popular apologetics website, CARM, advises their would-be missionaries into the dark realms of Neo-Paganism to stick to asking questions:

I find that asking questions is one of the best things you can do when talking to anybody in any different theological system. I ask questions and listened intently to the answers and then ask more questions. Invariably I begin to discover inconsistencies in their answers and I politely ask more questions around those inconsistencies. It does not take long for the person to start seeing that their belief system has serious problems. Remember, anything that is not based upon the Christian faith is false and will have errors which you can discover through asking questions.

I like the CARM site. It’s probably one of the best Christian apologetics sites out there, actually. I think it’s worth the effort to examine what they have and, once you realize that’s probably the best there is, it’s pretty easy to be well prepared for any comers.

All of the information they have about Neo-Paganism is under the heading of “Wicca.” They don’t really distinguish between types of Neo-Paganism. I think Wiccans account for about 80% of Neo-Paganism anyway, so it’s probably safe for them to keep it simple. Just keep in mind that to them, Neo-Pagan and Wiccan are the same thing, so all this information applies to their approach to any Neo-Pagan.

So, the CARM method is to start off questioning you to put you on the defensive. The missionary is not there to defend Christianity, at least not at first. He’s there to attack your beliefs though what are basically softened up court-room cross examination techniques. In other words, they are forcing you to be the apologist. CARM provides a convenient list of questions to get the missionary started:

1. Do the gods and goddesses of Wicca actually exist?
2. If they actually exist, how do you know they exist?
3. If your tradition contradicts the tradition of another Wiccan, can they both be objectively true?
4. How do you feel about believing in the religious system where you cater your religion to your desires?
5. if you cater/construct your religion according to our desires, then isn’t it nothing more than your own invention?
6. Is Wicca able to be shown to be false or is it all non-verifiable ideas?
7. If your spells and incantations produce results, how do you know that the power behind the results is good or not?
8. How do you know that there is something more sinister behind Wicca?
9. Why do you think that rituals dealing with candles, knives, and such are able to affect nature?

Yes, this approach is somewhat obnoxious and, as I suggested before, somewhat intellectually dishonest. But it can be used to our personal advantage. It would be worth while to consider these questions in your own spiritual practice and think about how you would answer these questions and similar ones in a polite and respectful manner. The primary benefit to you out of all this interaction with Christians is that the Christian acts as a sounding board for your own philosophical development. In other words, it will help your personal growth to allow them to be the interrogator they so badly seem to want to be. In a way, that’s exactly what the Christian is hoping for. They just make the additional assumption that, once shown you are in error, you should become Christian instead of just a slightly more sophisticated Pagan.

Here is how I might answer these questions if they were asked of me:

1. Do the gods and goddesses of Wicca [i.e. your Neo-Pagan Path] actually exist?

“Of course they do!”

2. If they actually exist, how do you know they exist?

“They told me.” Yes, I am being a little cheeky, but this line of questioning amuses me. They sound like Atheists here.

3. If your tradition contradicts the tradition of another Wiccan, can they both be objectively true?

“No. But so what? No religion is objectively true. They all deal with the subjective.” This answer is unfortunate in that it takes the focus off of you.. The Christian would have to jump from questioning you to Christian-Defense-Mode, which does you no good. Hopefully, they will have better sense than to ask this stupid question in the first place. Another answer might be: “None of the traditions hold an exclusive claim on Truth, so none of them objectively contradict each other as far as I know.” One problem with that is that you might end up defending religious paths you don’t even subscribe to. It might get complicated.

4. How do you feel about believing in the religious system where you cater your religion to your desires?

5. if you cater/construct your religion according to our desires, then isn’t it nothing more than your own invention?

I take these together, because they revolve around the same point. This brings up a lot of conflicting issues for me that I have not yet entirely resolved for myself. I think they actually have a good point here and one in which I often join them in making. I think there is a potential pitfall in Neo-Paganism in that, if you custom tailor your beliefs to exactly where you are now, spiritually, there is no real room for growth. You have nothing to give you direction on where to go next.

But, at least a partial response to the question they pose is this: “Everyone is on their own spiritual journey. We all follow the spiritual path of our own choosing. Some prefer taking a train, where everyone is along the same track. Some prefer going by car where the driving is up to you. Yes, you can get lost that way, and you might get sidetracked on occasion, but the trip is a lot more fulfilling.”

Another response, although seemingly in direct conflict to what I just said, is this: “We don’t construct our religion, we discover it. We don’t choose our gods. They choose us. Really nobody has a choice in what they believe. You can’t wake up one morning and chose to believe the Sun will rise in the West. You would have to be given a good reason to believe or stop believing, something. And then, when you have that good reason, you can’t help but to change your belief. So, it’s not something you can control.”

6. Is Wicca able to be shown to be false or is it all non-verifiable ideas?

This strange question is premised on this: that Christianity is falsifiable. You have a few choices here. One is that you can explain what would have to be demonstrated to you in order to abandon Wicca or whatever path you have chosen. I would do this if asked, I think, but my answer is long, complicated, and way too specific to me to go into here. Another option is to patiently explain that you follow a religion, not a science. Science is about falsifiable claims, not religion. Religion is about faith. Of course, that would lead to a confrontation about their bizarre belief that Christianity is falsifiable, putting them on the defensive. I’d avoid that if I could, because you don’t get any personal benefit out of their defending their beliefs.

7. If your spells and incantations produce results, how do you know that the power behind the results is good or not?

8. How do you know that there is something more sinister behind Wicca?

Again, these two questions are basically asking the same thing. My answer is: “Well, that’s where ‘faith’ comes into it, I suppose.” Of course, the question might easily be turned around: “How does a Christian know that the power they pray to is good or not?” All the bizarre demonic conspiracy theories they come up with to explain why all other world religions are false and “of the Devil” can just as easily be applied to theirs. They really don’t like that, though. Whenever I bring this up, the person I am “dialogueing” with blows a gasket. I’d avoid that argument unless you want to see them explode. Also, you lose the practical benefit of this interaction I’ve been talking about, though you do get the cruel satisfaction of watching them fluster.

9. Why do you think that rituals dealing with candles, knives, and such are able to affect nature?

“The same reason anyone else expects their prayers to be answered. It’s all part of having faith in a religion.” They might not understand that ritual is really a form of prayer. It’s “prayer with props.” That might take a little bit of explanation.

In spite of all this advice I give about appologetics, I don’t care for apologetics in general. While apologetics have their place, I suppose, they often turn logic on its head in a mockery of true philosophy. Where logic starts with a premise and progresses to a conclusion, apologetics start with a conclusion and builds up the arguments in reverse, often ignoring or concealing the premise altogether. When I defend my faith, I don’t think it’s really apologetics. I am not merely defending my own conclusions, I am exploring them and testing them along with my “attacker.” If my conclusions cannot withstand my scrutiny, with the assistance of a Christian sounding board, they must be revised or replaced.

If you are a Christian who is interested in saving my soul, I always welcome your questions. Try your best to poke holes in my philosophy. It’s what I live for. I have learned and grown a lot from those kinds of interactions, and mostly when an inconsistency or error has been shown to me. I love being shown I’m wrong more than just about anything. And this invitation is not just for Christians. Anyone who wants to show me the error of my ways is invited to join in.

Most Christians are decent people, just like most of everyone else. Some, though, for religious motivations, seek you out to confront you either to convert you or “expose” you. I’ve identified three categories of these Christian antagonists. This guide is about dealing with them and other Christians you may encounter.

But why deal with them at all? Well, for starters, you don’t have much choice. They are everywhere. There comes a point at which you have to respond at some level. The second reason is to help counter the antagonistic Christians’ influence over interested third parties. The people who are on the fence about religion, who don’t know about Paganism, or may have some fears but are persuadable, these people are your real audience, not the antagonistic Christian you are talking to. Remember this: you will never ever persuade a Christian who accosts you to think any differently than they do, at least not immediately. Yes, down the road, your words and actions may have some impact on them but don’t expect them to. The third reason to deal with them is to blow off steam. It’s understandable and inevitable, as dealing with them can be infuriating, but do be careful with this. If you respond with anger and name-calling, as justifiable as it may be, it may give them more ammunition to use against us all.

Now, let’s look at the types of antagonistic Christians you may have to deal with. I’ve come up with three categories, but they may overlap in individuals. They differ predominately in how Machiavellian the Christian is willing to be in order to achieve his or her goals. To some extent, “the ends justify the means” to all of these Christians, but to what extent and under what circumstances, that is the differentiation used here.

The Jerk

The first type of Christian we will discuss is the Jerk. He is, or can be, actually the most respectable of the bunch because of his honesty. He is rude and confrontational, but you know where you stand. Rational argument is not a good approach here. They won’t understand it and it is only taken as an invitation to be more obnoxious. The best approach is to kill them with kindness. It may cause them to escalate at first, but it will deprive them of their main objective: getting you angry and to be rude back to them. Wish the blessings of your gods upon them, show sympathy for their fear and anger, give them blessings of peace and love. Nothing will piss them off more. Do not respond with anger as it will get you nowhere and can only give them ammunition against you. Politely point out that they are being disrespectful if necessary, but remain polite and dignified.

The Pseudo-Intellectual

The pseudo-intellectual is the polite evangelical who wants to “engage you in meaningful dialogue.” Basically, they’ve memorized a few apologetic arguments and they can’t wait to try them out on you. I don’t like these people very much because they lack integrity, but I appreciate them and often seek them out for debate. Their assurances to the contrary aside, they don’t really want a dialogue, they want to win converts. They will not approach discussion with any kind of desire to learn anything except facts they can try to use against you. They may seem reasonable, but reasonableness would mean that they could be persuaded with reason. They cannot. Though, of course, they expect you to be.

Still, discussing philosophical points with them is a healthy thing as long as you keep in mind that you are not going to “win.” Don’t expect to. The dialogue can still help you in your own growth, to sharpen and strengthen your own philosophy. That’s how I use it, anyway. Also, again, though you will not convince your “opponent” about anything, well reasoned arguments calmly presented may be persuasive to third parties.

Don’t be afraid to “lose” this contest. They’ve come extremely well armed and prepared to argue one or two specific points while you probably are not. Just nod appreciatively and say something like, “That’s a good point. I’ll have to give that more thought.” That should get them off your back for a little while. They can leave feeling good about themselves, and that’s no skin off your nose.

If you want to get better at debating these people, go visit their websites and learn their arguments. A google search for “apologetics” should get you everything you need. There aren’t that many arguments, really, and with a little forethought, they aren’t that difficult to counter. They mainly count on people not being as prepared as they are. But no matter how good you are arguing with them, they will never ever concede a point. Ever. Be prepared to be frustrated.

The Crusader

The crusader is one who is on a mission from God to destroy you. To them, you are not just evil, you are EVIL! What this means is that they will feel justified in using almost any deceit or underhanded tactic, in breaking most any law, and in ignoring most standards of decency in order to advance their “righteous” cause. They might spout what they know to be outright lies and distortions of facts. They might try to “out” you though investigative means so that you can be targeted for vandalism, threats of violence, and smear campaigns to ruin your career or take your children away. I know I sound alarmist, but this is very real.

My general advice in dealing with these people is DON’T! You should avoid them if at all possible. If you do engage them, do so with extreme care and remember that anything you give them, they will twist and pervert and use against you if they can. Don’t get me wrong, they do need to be fought, but it should be left to people who are prepared to take the heat. If you are one of those people, may the Gods bless you, because there are few who are in such a position in their lives.

The Crusaders tend to look like the other two types, but they may do something to tip their hand, at which time you can correct your strategy for dealing with them. The Jerk will be obnoxious, but not overtly threatening. The psuedo-intellectual will be intellectually dishonest, but will not shamelessly lie to you. There are a few other tells. For example, if they ever write EVIL in all capital letters in reference to non-Christians of any sort, they are probably Crusaders. Tread very very carefully with these people as they are mentally unbalanced and dangerous.

The Indifferent

The three categories discussed so far are the Christians who will actively accost you. The indifferent Christian won’t. These are the vast majority of Christians and, because of their numbers alone, you will come in contact with them, probably accidentally, on a daily basis. Until you have evidence to the contrary, assume any Christian you meet falls in this category.

They are indifferent about Paganism, generally, and haven’t given it a whole lot of thought. They go through life assuming all normal people are just like them, and so all normal people are Christians, and see the world though a Christian perspective, just like they do. What little they do know about Paganism is the fear-mongering propaganda sold to them by the Crusaders, so they may have a generally negative initial reaction to anything pagan, but the difference between these people and the three antagonistic types is that they can often be persuaded by reason to give a modicum of tolerance to Pagans.

Note that their indifference to you extends to what they perceive as your civil liberties, too, so you can’t just write them off completely. They are all for religious freedom, but they assume it’s Christian religious freedom. They are all for rights to privacy, rights to raise children in one’s faith, etc., but assume that they are only talking about Christian issues, Christian children. They will, usually inadvertently, leave consideration of your rights out of the equation.

The best tactic to dealing with them is by just showing them you are a person too, just like they are. Let them see how “normal” and human you are. Be honest and courteous. Cut them some slack; forgive their blunderous faux-pas’. Remember that Paganism is completely alien to them and more than a little scary, so be gentle.

Lastly, don’t try to get their respect for your religious views. It’s asking too much. Their worldview simply does not permit them to consider any other religion as “equally valid.” They will probably always think you are a little nuts, a little weird, and basically “wrong.” You will have to live with that. What we are shooting for with these people is tolerance. That is not the same as respect. Tolerance is when you think someone is wrong, and you let them be wrong. You “tolerate” their mistakes. We have a right to tolerance and to be respected as humans, if not as Pagans. Just remember: to get tolerance and civility, you have to give it, too. And, fair or not, you will be called to show tolerance and civility a lot more often than they will. Hopefully, together, we can work towards a more tolerant, pluralistic society. Just be ready to have to do most of the work.

Today, I am talking about Beauty and Truth, two of the biggies of philosophy. Beauty has it’s own branch of philosophy devoted to it, aesthetics, but it’s not one I spent much time dwelling on until recently. You see, recently, I’ve had an “Ah HA!” moment. This was caused by hearing about something someone said about a discussion thread on my forums. I heard that she said something to the effect of: “the foundation of morality isn’t preservation or propagation of existence, but propagation of Beauty.”

Up to now, I’ve focused on the very fundamental principles I am working with, the most fundamental being the continuation of a species, or a tribe, or humanity in general, but this is not sufficient in itself, obviously. Ants reproduce, bacteria reproduces, but we wouldn’t call that particularly virtuous and certainly not moral, per se. So, it’s time we go beyond mere survival, and I think this sums it up: survival and propagation of our species is actually a means to an end: That end is propagating and preserving Beauty.

So let’s talk about Beauty and what it is. What we are talking about is big-B Beauty, not merely “prettiness.” There is the sense of sublime awe we feel when we perceive it, and we might see it in a sunset, in a field of flowers, in an elegant mathematical proof. Sometimes it’s not pretty at all. It is Truth according to Keats, and I think he was on to something.

Our Celtic ancestors saw a relationship between Truth and Beauty as well.

Three things which strengthen a person to stand against the whole world: Seeing the quality and beauty of truth; seeing beneath the cloak of falsehood; and seeing to what ends truth and falsehood come.

In their words, we understand that Truth is beautiful, and seeing that beauty gives us strength. But beauty is found in other ways:

The three most beautiful sights: a potato garden in bloom, a ship in sail, a woman after the birth of her child.

This is one of my favorite triads and I find the imagery very moving. Here, beauty is seen in the bounty of nature, in fertility, birth, new life, in potentials. Although, a “ship in sail” seems a bit out of place, doesn’t it? A ship in sail, though, is the culmination of an exquisite balance: the cut of the bow in the water, the sails full of wind, a hand on the rudder to turn it to that perfect angle where everything comes together. The huge ship is propelled forward by its harmony with nature.

I think the point of these, taken together, is that Truth is Harmony in Nature, which is Beauty. The highest natural state is a harmony, a balance. And when there that harmony, and balance, that is where we find Beauty. I might even go so far as to suggest that is the great Truth the world religions try to point us toward. It is the grandness of nature that makes us feel both insignificant, and wondrous, base, and yet perfect, a small part of something wonderful.

I’ve said before that there are three tests to find the truth of philosophical matters: reason, experience, and intuition. Well, here, we are talking about the “intuition” part of that equation. When we see or perceive something truly Beautiful, that is our intuitive perception of Truth, of the Natural Harmony. We can, then, sense Truth intuitively by its Beauty.

But, I’m a practical person. So, briefly on to practical matters. How do we exhibit Beauty in our lives, how do we propagate it? A wisdom triad tells us that there are three beautiful beings of the world: the upright, the skillful, and the reasonable. We display beauty not by putting on makeup and nice clothes. We display beauty by being virtuous, by working hard and training hard, by being understanding and kind.

One last triad I would like to leave you with:

Three people who will please the Mighty Ones: they who love everything living with their whole heart, they who love every beautiful thing with their whole strength, and they who seek every knowledge with their whole understanding.

So, then, I urge you to Seek knowledge, Love beauty, and Love life.
